Trippy beats, far out fusion jams and psychedelic music

The Electric Peanut Butter Company

The Electric Peanut Butter Company is the brainchild of musicians Adrian Quesada and Shawn Lee. Adrian Quesada is a Grammy Award winning producer and guitarist. Based in Austin, TX, he is best known as a member and producer of psychedelic soul band Black Pumas. Shawn Lee (b1963) is an American musician. His music is jam oriented, taking the listening through groove inspired cosmic spaghetti westerns or plunging them deep into a swampy mire of psychedelic guitar driven beats. As Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra, Lee has released 10 albums on US label Ubiquity Records

Tommy Guerrero

Tommy Guerrero may be better known in the world of skateboarding than music. Born in San Francisco, Guerrero joined the skate company Powell Peralta in 1984 and became one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. TG has been playing music since the late 70’s with his brother Tony  -both raised on a steady diet of DIY punk music/ethos and skateboarding-which informed and shaped the person he is today. Since then, Guerrero has become an accomplished bassist and guitarist with influences as diverse as John Coltrane, Bad brains, Joy Division and Gabor Szabo. –  www.tommyguerrero.com

Alek Lee

Though Alek Lee is known as one of the busiest and most eclectic djs in Tel Aviv, he grew up playing drums and soon developed proficiency in percussion, singing, writing and playing other instruments as well as producing original music and remixes, and playing for other projects, both in the studio and in live. These days he is running his new live act by the name of “Alek Lee & The Leaders”, with himself on the vocals and congas, singing his new original songs in hebrew, backed up by a full band including drums, bass, electric guitar and samples from the studio productions. no computer.

The Malah have been captivating ears across the country with their organic, electro grooves since 2003. Having recently relocated to the burgeoning music scene in Colorado, by way of Greenville, SC, The Malah have spent the last decade touring relentlessly, mastering their sound, and gaining a devout fan-base along the way. In a scene where live-electronic music is running rampant, the Malah have managed to stand out by mixing rich, earthy atmospheres with electrifying rhythms. The trio explores the meeting point of cutting-edge technology and ancient musical theory, creating a unique sound that is praised in both the “Jam” and “Electronica” communities. The music is constantly evolving and brings together influences from an endless array of genres including Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, World Beat, and Breakbeat with an effortless transition.

Widespread Panic has been together for over 30 years. Formed by original members vocalist/guitarist John “JB” Bell, bassist Dave Schools and late guitarist Michael Houser, who lived together in a suburban house in Athens, GA, where they met as students not far from the University of Georgia campus, later to be joined by drummer Todd Nance. The band’s line-up was solidified with the addition of percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz and keyboard player John “JoJo” Hermann and Duane Trucks on drums. A mixture of Peruvian, Colombian and New York musicians, La Mecánica Popular is part of the new wave of tropical music. Steeped in the roots of 1970’s era salsa dura and heavily influenced by the psychedelic experimental sounds of Peru, the band combines a proper dose of ambience and hard rhythms.   – Bandcamp

Those Shocking Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk 1970-1978

Editorial Review from Amazon – The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto. Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely outside of the confines of this island nation unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn’t been remedied by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years. Thanks now to the tireless and expensive research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason Moss Connoy – and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland’s islands securing the rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology – we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of Suharto’s regime.

Its all great but here are 7 of my favourite tracks off the album

Ouzo Bazooka is a Tel Aviv based psychedelic rock group, borrowing from the groovy sounds of the middle eastern region. Ouzo Bazooka’s exotic sound is a dizzying concoction of East meets West. Their latest excursion includes the release of a tripped-out, post-apocalyptic music video for the single “Southern Winds”. Ouzo Bazooka’s self-titled freshman album boasts 13 masterfully crafted hits that transport listeners to a drunken Middle Eastern, ouzo-drenched dance party. – Soundcloud

Khruangbin

Taking influence from 1960’s Thai funk – their name literally translates to “Engine Fly” in Thai – Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

“CRUSH takes off where RAGE and FLY left off. We continue our journey of the Funk universe playing through many styles, including Psychedelia, Classic Soul, and Hip Hop. While still paying tribute to the past, this album clearly is pushing boundaries and has us heading into the Future.” – Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff

“Our vibe going into the studio for this record couldn’t have been better. We played more shows than we ever had before leading up to the recording and I feel like we really captured that energy this time.” – Ryan Zoidis

Zammuto, led by ex Books Nick Zammuto are classified as indie rock, but with their long meandering instrumentals and quirky melodies they clearly spend a lot of time under the jam band tent.

This release by Pablo Clements and the Evangelist, the men from U.N.K.L.E., is comprised of psych-pop and glam rock matched by exclusive re-edits. “The Evangelist mix tape is a collection of remixes and re-edits of some of our favourite tracks that have inspired us over the years”, says Pablo. “From the more obscure works of yesterday and today, to popular classics that have been reworked in the sound of the Evangelist.” As a production team, Pablo Clements and James Griffith (TOYDRUM) draw on a wide range of psychedelic pop, glam, folk, and vintage electronic influences. “Musically it has laid the foundation for our forthcoming project, The Evangelist, featuring long-time friend and collaborator Gavin Clark, whose vocals are featured on new tracks peppered throughout the mix.” Mixcoud

Mesmerizing, spellbinding and genre-defying: With their fourth full-length studio release Extras In A Movie, Papadosio reveals a striking cinematic cornucopia of sounds: orchestral, electronic, organic, acoustic, psychedelic and celestial. The 16 selections that comprise the song cycle are concise and structured – launch pads for the improvisational excursions that are a hallmark of the band’s celebrated concert performances. Originally from  Athens, Ohio, the band is now centered in Asheville, North Carolina – Soundcloud

DJ GROUND started DJing in his teenage days and has played all over Japan with Osaka’s underground music scene. He’s a true omnivore when it comes to music – his style is a widespread border- and genreless garden of sound with absolutely no barriers, picking bits and pieces of whatever feels right and good to him. This led to numerous releases on various labels all over the globe, such as Chillmountain, Most Excellent, Magic Wand, Bokeh Versions and now on Multi Culti’s Moon Faze Sun Gaze compilation.Together with Mori-Ra he teamed up for an amazing edit work as Oyama Edit .

Crystal Syphon, one of the greatest “lost” groups of the West Coast psych scene, came together in Merced, California in 1965. Originally a Beatles / Byrds-influenced unit called the Morlochs, they soon shed their original moniker and moved in a more psychedelic direction, becoming a fixture on the ballroom circuit from 1966-1970. Although their music may nod in the direction of the New Tweedy Brothers and Quicksilver Messenger Service at times, it’s imbued throughout with a distinctive sound that arose from practicing up to six nights a week. The band entertained offers from various labels during their existence, but as they insisted on complete artistic control and ownership of their music, no deals were struck. Now, some 44 years after its creation, Roaratorio is making the music of Crystal Syphon available for the first time ever. Drawn from studio tracks, rehearsal tapes and a live recording from the Fillmore West, Family Evil is released in an edition of only 500 copies!

Orchestra of Spheres are a psychedelic rock group, but are definitely a more whimsical take on the genre. The New Zealand group play home made instruments and wear silly outfits, while their music has major influences of afro-rock and drifting stoner rock. Below is a 9 clip Youtube playlist. And here are a few cuts off Soundcloud…

Heres a 4 track playlist by Swedish nu jazz fusion trio KUF. Experimental yet rewarding for those with an ear for a groove. One thing’s for sure, these boys can sure play. Notice how much of the crazy reverb and effects are coming through the stand up bass, often played with a bow.

Beyond the Wizards Sleeve have created an epic 42-minute re-working of Sun Structures, using five re-interpreted tracks (Sand Dance, Shelter Song, A Question Isn’t Answered, Golden Throne & Move With The Season) from the original album.

Darkside drum machine jazz from Berceuse Heroique, Nous and Bedouin regular Healing Force Project. Sounding like early 23 Skidoo replayed on drum machines and samplers, there’s much to admire about the hectic rhythms, foreboding textures and dusty samples at the heart of Gravitational Lensing. It’s all pretty out there, paranoid and intense, with the fizzing drums, mangled horns and metallic percussion hits of “Random Walks” just edging out the experimental jungle-jazz madness of “Apophenia” in the “top tracks” stakes. It might take a few plays to really sink in, but there’s no doubt it’s worth the effort-(Juno Records Review)
